2018 ICNZ Club Nationals: Day 1 Results

Day 1 of the Club Nationals Tournament from Christchurch has concluded, with a number of teams making some strong impressions and others with work to do. Here are the results and standings from each grade:

Premier Men’s:

Teams were split in groups of three in the nine-team competition (groups A, B and C), playing each other once. The end of the first group stage derived a second break-down of groups, with the first, second and third placed teams from each group being allocated into groups D, E and F respectively, with those matches to take place tomorrow.

After the second round of group matches, the teams will be ranked 1st through to 8th based on points derived from matches, which forms the basis for the quarter-finals on Saturday morning. The 8th placed side will face off against the 9th placed team tomorrow night for the last spot in the quarter-finals. Hutt Valley, St Lukes and Action Waitakere all took the honours in their group with Action Hornby, Action Hamilton and Howzat all a win behind.

Open Men’s:

The Open Men’s draw was split into three groups of five teams each, all playing a full round-robin. A number of teams have played two or three matches on the first day, and will complete the group stages before the quarter-finals which take place tomorrow night.

There is plenty to play for, with the top two sides from each pool advancing to the quarter-finals, with the highest third-placed side across the groups also getting a shot against the top side from another pool. The two lowest ranked third-placed sides across the three groups will play an elimination match against each other to advance to a quarter-final clash. In group A it was Hutt Valley who took two big wins to go to the top of group A. St Lukes Black have done very much the same after three games in group B, with Metro Dunedin also unbeaten. St Lukes Green rounded out a good day for the St Lukes club with two wins, as the Mount Mako’s from the Bay of Plenty went to top spot in group C having played an extra match.

Masters (Over-40s):

The Masters (Over-40s) competition has been split into two groups of six teams each, with the top four teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals which take place tomorrow night. In group A it was local team Howzat Black and the Australian-based Gold Coast Stars who started impressively, whilst in group B another Christchurch-based side, Action Hornby went clear at the top winning three games on the bounce. They lead a number of other teams by a game at this stage.

21 & Under Boy’s:

The 21 & Under Boy’s division has gone through it’s first of two round robin matches today. The Pakuranga under-21s looked most assured, taking seven out of eight possible skins in their first two outings. Wellington Indoor Sports Club and Action Christchurch managed a win apiece. The next round tomorrow is crucial with the first-placed side going straight through to the final, whilst the second and third ranked sides play off in the semi-finals on Sunday morning.
