Press Release: NZ Mens 2021

With the recent exciting announcements of the resumption of International Indoor Cricket in 2022, and with NZ provincial teams being named and beginning their preparations for the 2021 Senior Provincials in Christchurch, ICNZ is thrilled to announce the plans for the men’s high-performance programme for 2021.

With a full domestic calendar after last year’s many disruptions, the NZ Premier men’s coaching team of Leigh Kelly and Jon Routhan are pleased to announce their plans to continue their preparations towards winning the next World Cup.

At the conclusion of the Provincial Championships in July, a squad of 20 players will be selected to play a 5-match series from the 20th – 22nd August in the Northern Region.

These 20 players will be split in to two teams to go head-to-head in these matches with plenty of work on game plans and culture in between.  The first match will take place on the evening of Friday 20th August, in front of what is sure to be a packed house during the National master’s championships in Hamilton.  The remaining 4 games will be played in Auckland over the weekend of 21st and 22nd August, slotting in around Northern Superleague, allowing a wide group of spectators to get a look at the best players in New Zealand, trying to put their names forward to be on the plane come October next year.  Times and venues for these matches will be confirmed over the coming months and will be free to all to attend.

When asked Kelly said “the weekend is a great opportunity for us to expand the number of quality players exposed to the NZ environment, and to assess the capabilities of our group against the best players in the country”.

Superleagues around the country are in full swing, and the Northern Club champs will be taking place over the Queens Birthday Weekend with 2 premier teams from the Central region taking part.  Good luck to all and enjoy your time back on the court playing our great game!
